Every August, the grand esplanade of Edinburgh Castle transforms into a breathtaking stage for one of Scotland’s most spectacular events – the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

But don’t let the name fool you—it’s not about inked skin! In Scotland, “tattoo” comes from the Dutch phrase “doe den tap toe,” meaning “turn off the tap,” a signal for soldiers to return to their barracks from the taverns.

This vibrant performance features pipers, drummers, dancers, and military bands from all over the world, blending traditional Scottish music with modern flair. The rhythmic sound of massed pipes and drums echoes through the historic castle walls, while dazzling lights, fireworks, and precision marches light up the night sky.
